US Citizens for European Travel Authorization: For most countries in the world, going to Europe has never been easier. Most European countries no longer have borders with each other, and many countries do not require visas to visit. As a result, their main cities are some of the most popular tourist spots in the world.
People in the United States are still interested in traveling to Europe, and people in Europe are still interested in traveling to the 50 states in North America. But because of the red tape that comes with traveling in many countries, people in the US are often confused about whether they need to apply for an EU visa before their trip to the Schengen Zone, what steps they need to take, and what papers they need to get.

Do people from the US Citizens need an EU visa to go to Europe?

Note: Beginning in May 2025, US citizens planning to travel to Europe will need to apply for an ETIAS before they can enter the country.
What do Americans need to get into the Schengen Area?
US citizens don’t need to get an EU visa before going to Schengen, but they do need to bring certain papers with them in order to get into Europe’s visa-free zone.
People from the United States who want to join the Schengen Zone will be asked to show the following documents at the border:
- A US ID card. It shouldn’t be more than 10 years old, and it should still be good for at least three months after the person plans to leave the Schengen Area.
- The ETIAS authorization will begin in May 2025.
- Proof of their reason for entering. Proof of the reason the US person wants to visit the Schengen Area.
- Proof that you have enough money. Proof from the US tourist that they have enough money to cover their stay in Europe from start to finish.
Always remember that the border guard is the only one who can decide if a tourist can enter the Schengen Zone or not. In the event that you are turned away from any EU member state, you will need to return to the US and apply for a normal Schengen visa.
If your entry is accepted, you will get a stamp that shows the date you arrived in the country.
Where in the EU can Americans go without a visa?
The lucky people who travel the world are Americans, who can enter and journey throughout the whole Schengen Zone/EU without needing an EU visa. From the United States, you can visit the following European countries without a short-term Schengen visa:

Americans are only allowed to stay in the Schengen Area for 90 days out of every 180 days.
Don’t forget that:
- The day you entered is the first day of your stay.
- The last day you can stay is the date you leave.
Keep track of how long you stay in Schengen. If you overstay, you will always face effects like fines or being sent back to your home country, even if you didn’t mean to.
The 90/180 rule is hard for a lot of people to understand. But the rule is really easy to understand. The 180-day time frame keeps going. This means that whenever you want to enter Schengen, all you have to do is look back 180 days and see if you were there for more than 90 days during that time.
It’s important to note that the length of a visa-free stay does not include the time spent in the country before with a residence pass or a long-stay visa.
