Driving license eligibility in Abu Dhabi
Anyone in Abu Dhabi who is over the legal age and meets the medical standards for fitness can apply for a new driver’s license. Depending on the kind of vehicle a person plans to drive, there are various minimum legal driving ages.
- To get a license to drive a motorcycle or a vehicle for people with special needs, you must be at least 17 years old.
- To be eligible to get a driving license for cars and other light vehicles, you must be at least 18 years old.
- To get a license to drive a tractor or a heavy vehicle, you must be at least 20 years old.
- Must be at least 21 years old to be eligible for a bus driver’s license.
Drivers from non-exempt nations can now directly apply for a UAE Light Motor Vehicle driving license by passing a specific test thanks to the Road and Transport Authority’s (RTA) introduction of the Golden Chance Driving License in the UAE.
Abu Dhabi Driver License Application Process
- Make an eye exam a priority: Visit an accredited optician in Abu Dhabi who has been given permission by the traffic and licensing authority to perform an eye exam. Don’t forget to bring a current Emirates ID for the test.
- The file for a driver’s license: Use the TAMM portal, the official Abu Dhabi Government services portal, or the Abu Dhabi Police mobile application to quickly open a traffic file online.
The following files need to be uploaded for applications from TAMM and Abu Dhabi Police:- Emirates ID
- eye test certificate/report
- one passport-size photo
Once you have all the necessary paperwork ready: - visit the official TAMM website
- go to the Individual Services section and select ‘Drive & Transport’
- ‘Request to Open a Driving License File’ should be selected.
- ‘Start’ should be chosen, then enter your UAE Pass to log in.
- Select the appropriate licensing category
- Choose the ‘new’ request category.
- Select the branch of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Licensing Department that you like to take your driving test at.
- Upload the required files
- Make the payment to complete the opening of a traffic file procedure.
- Successfully complete the theory test and internal practical training: After you’ve opened your traffic file, head over to the Emirate Driving Company (EDC) and use your traffic file number to sign up for theory lessons and the theory test. Additionally, while working at EDC, register for the internal practical training and test for parking and yard work.You must bring the following paperwork to EDC:
- traffic file number
- Emirates ID
- copy of your passport
- copy of your residency visa
- personal picture. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the applicant’s guardian is required for candidates under the age of 17. However, if you are 18 years of age or above, this rule does not apply to you. A “Successful Completion of Theory Exam and Internal Practical Training certificate” will be given to you if you successfully complete the theory exam and the internal practical training and test.
- Get a training permit and ask for a date for the issue of the road test: Before starting your driving lessons, you must schedule a time for your road test. The TAMM portal can be used in the following ways:

- Go to the Individual Services section and select ‘Drive & Transport’
- ‘Request a Driving Test Date’ by clicking.
- ‘Start’ should be chosen, then enter your UAE Pass to log in.
- The number on your traffic file
- Verify the driving test site you choose in step 2.
- Pay the necessary chargeYou will receive an SMS confirming the test day and location after scheduling your driving test using the Tamm portal. Your training permit card will thereafter be provided.You can start the necessary driving classes known as “external practical training” or “external road training” after arranging the road test.
- Complete 6 hours or more of outside road training: The following step is to sign up for and finish at least six hours of driving instruction at any private driving school in Abu Dhabi.The following papers must be provided when signing up for a private driving school in Abu Dhabi:
- Traffic file number
- Emirates ID
- Copy of your passport
- Copy of your residence visa
- Personal picture
- Training permit
- Successful completion of Theory Exam and Internal Practical Training
- The ability to pass the road test: After that, go to the Abu Dhabi branch (Abu Dhabi Driver License) of the traffic licensing department that you selected when you opened your file to take the road test. You will receive your driver’s license after passing the road test.
- Get your license to drive: You have the choice of visiting your driving school or the Customer Happiness Centers of the Abu Dhabi Police to receive your driving license card.The card might be delivered to you in one of two ways:
- A digital driving license card (Abu Dhabi Driver License) will be sent to your registered email address or mobile number. Additionally, you can use the Abu Dhabi Police app to obtain the electronic version of your driver’s license.
- Within 10 days, the actual driving license card will be issued.
